There have been many an anti-smoking campaigns but most of them usually focus on impact of tobacco on health and family. But the latest Tabaconomia, the online campaign of government of the State of Sao Paulo and Master Comunicacao, Brazil calculates how much money one spends on cigarettes and what it can buy. It is an intelligent campaign focusing on impact of tobacco and smoking on economy.

People can go to the site tabaconomia.com.br and use tabacocalculadora to calculate their yearly spending on cigarettes and what that translates into. For example the amount spent may actually be equal to the cost of some cool electronic gadget, home needs like fridge, TV or even a car. The posters of the campaign will certainly drive people to site to calculate how much money they have actually smoked away and thus stubbed out dreams of owning something they long for.

This is an interesting campaign in the times of recession. Economy is on everyone’s mind. This campaign should make an impact for maybe one is not worried about lung cancer or death but certainly smokers do have a zest to enjoy good things in life and life itself. This will give them a good reason to kick the habit for more modern comforts.

Social campaigns must shock people to wake them from stupor and force them to think about their action and even inactions. The Lung Association’s ‘Hole’ campaign will surely shock many a smokers and may give them a repelling reason to finally kick the butt for good.

The above picture of a man with a hole in the neck is not a mere poster. This picture was placed at public ashbins where smokers stub out their fags. Fag ends need to be stubbed out in this neck-hole. The message reads “This man smoked 125,000 cigarettes before he got cancer. What number did you just finish? The Lung Association – Nothing is more important than your next breath.”

Anti-smoking and anti-cancer campaigners try all possible methods to spread the message. Some give repelling pictures of actual cancerous growths as well. Some give statistics of incidence of cancer among smokers. This surely is most hard-hitting of them all. A perfectly healthy smiling man may be killing himself by indulging in smoking. Smokers argue about high pollution levels choking all lungs, but kicking the habit will atleast erase one cause of cancer. Thats the least we can do for ourselves. The message is loud and clear!

This public awareness campaign executed by EURO RSG FLAGSHIP for the THAI HEALTH PROMOTION FOUNDATION is a timely series of messages, especially in a country such as Thailand where the rate of tobacco smoking is very high. Worldwide, second hand smoke is a major cause of children’s illness. However, 85 percent of adults who smoke and, at the same time, living with a child are unmindful that the child actually inhales their cigarette smoke. This gross irresponsibility has grave impact on children’s health. In this particualar visual, it clearly shows that if an adult smokes in the presence of a child, it is nothing short of letting the child smoke herself.

Second-hand smoke, sometimes called environmental tobacco smoke or ETS, contains 40 toxic substances that cause cancer. Some of these killer substances have stronger concentrations in second hand smoke than they do in the smoke that goes directly into smokers’ lungs. In children, ETS is linked to lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, increased fluid in the middle ear, upper respiratory tract irritation, and reduced lung function. There is scientific truth in the popular notion that a non-smoker who finds himself near someone who is smoking a cigarette is more vulnerable to the harmful effects of tobacco than the smoker himself. This is more pronounced tenfold if the non-smoker happens to be a child.

Children have the greatest benefit in any anti-smoking campaign. Kids are affected more with the harmful effects of tobacco because they breathe more air relative to body weight. Their immune system is relatively weaker. They are also less able to refrain themselves from exposure. Even if an adult smokes only in one room, tobacco smoke permeates the whole house because most of these highly dangerous substances are invisible gas.
