They are mysterious, financially well-off, adrenaline-pumped, difficult to catch, and very powerful. With cybercrime on the upswing worldwide, Russian professional hackers are at their career best. It goes without saying, of course, that hackers thrive on the fact that everything in the world today is virtually run by computers. The worldwide financial and banking systems, telecom systems, and other vital operations are run by computers whose operating processes ‘can be broken into and destroyed.’

So, should a Russian professional hacker decide to work on making a satellite collapse and fall to Earth, he can very well do so if his reputation is worth its weight in gold.

Over the recent years, computer operating systems in the US have fallen prey to Russian hackers who have managed to break into systems of major companies, as well as the Pentagon. The seemingly impenetrable leader in computer technology is no match to the brilliance of Russian hackers. Even the cybercrime division of the Russian police admits that ‘Russian hackers are the strongest in the world.’

The real problem behind cybercrime is not so much that some hackers are extremely brilliant as the fact that, while Internet crime is a borderless phenomenon, the legal and criminal punishment for it is not internationally standardized. Perhaps, it is time for cybercrime to stop being a transnational crime, and start being recognized as a global crime.
