There are dogs out there that are specifically trained to guide the blind folk when they step out of their home and these highly intelligent and resourceful canines often are a much better choice than any stick or modern technological gadget on the planet. But there is one downside to the whole thing, which being they fail to work efficiently beyond the trained path. So in case someone wishes to step outside this defined path, the dogs no longer become that reliable. To solve this tricky problem designer Jason Perkins has created ‘Peepo’. This GPS device charts the course and guides the dog to the desired destination using a series of vibrations to steer him. (Totally harmless PETA, no need to jump up and shout now)

The two-part device comprises of a handheld GPS unit, which uses vocal commands to register the destination, map it and then gives the directions. The second unit is strapped on the dog and sends vibrations accordingly to steer it. The best part of the technology being the “return home same way” key that saves plenty of trouble. Simple, hassle-free and efficient, we give Peepo a huge ‘thumbs up’ and hopefully so will those who use it.

A dog is man’s best friend and since I’m not a man I can safely say no dog is my best friend without fear of men beating me up. Men spend way too much time pampering these drooling balls of fur and if you second my feelings then this bit of news would have you burning in fury.

PawPaws is a day care centre, grooming facility and training classroom all rolled into one but even for all the money in the world I probably wouldn’t get any service here and all because I don’t belong to a species that drinks out of the toilet. How fair is that? The rich doggy centre has eight themed nurseries, custom furniture and entertainment as if any dog could ask for more than a bone. Three different salons will give your mutt washes and fur-cuts with the best that money can buy. The centre has a play terrace, a spa where they can get a massage from a young man with sweet smelling many varieties of oils. If they don’t find the guy interesting, they can even have a pretty young lady do a pole dance for them, though I don’t understand how this could possibly help.

The only service that PawPaws offers which the dogs truly need is the training school and if they graduate from that perhaps they would stop chewing on your bedroom slippers. On the other hand, if you think I’m bats and you’ve a load of dough to waste then you could take your pet there.

If there was something that I always loved, it was the Victorian sense of luxury and snobbery. Victorian age was repressive and curtailing, but it also was the time during the industrial age when people respected the beauty of nature and the gradual loss of greenery to machines and industries.

FRANK, the UK government drugs and alcohol helpline, has been running a very helpful information campaign on the latest issues concerning drug use. Recently, the concern group came up with a very innovative and gripping interactive digital information campaign on the use of drug mules in cocaine trafficking. Drug mules are either people or animals, mostly dogs, that ingest small bags or packets of illegal drugs, transport them physically when they move to a foreign place of distribution and delivery – in an organized international cocaine smuggling scheme. Humans are operated on to extract the ingested drug packets. Dogs, on the other hand, are simply killed in the process.

Cocaine has known very creative ways of smuggling. Cocaine traffickers have resorted to countless strategies to transport the drug from one country to another, some in seemingly unimaginable tactics. In 2003, a celebrated court case appeared in the news where three Britons were charged with smuggling drugs with the use of two Labrador dogs at Amsterdam’s Schipol airport. The drugs were implanted under the dogs’ skin. This was the first ever case cracked open in Europe that revealed the underworld of using animals as drug mules.

This darker side of cocaine trade is shown in FRANK’s basement campaign, executed by the agency Profero. This dark and dingy place is a very apt location where the darker side of the nefarious trade takes place. The basement is truly hell, especially for dog drug mules who do not come out of the basement alive.

If someone said something about rubbing salt on somebody’s wounds, a lady surgeon in Cirencester has arranged for the world’s most expensive kennel, which is more expensive than any house we could normally buy. That is, if we earned money decently. If you had wanted to sleep on luxurious sheepskin lined and temperature controlled beds, then you will have to eye these dogs enviously. They not only get to sleep on luxurious beds but also listen to groovy music with a 150,000 Pounds sound system.

However, I did not know that dogs could make out subtle differences in decibels or that they cared about how rich their kennel was. The kennel is climate controlled and the list of luxuries is rather exhaustive to be listed here. I wonder why the dogs get to enjoy so much when people are rattling their bones with the economic crisis and when banks are shutting down.

Perhaps, the woman who has commissioned that kind of money for a kennel would be in a better position to tell us why she thinks the dogs must bask in such luxury. Meanwhile, dog lovers can feel guilty about not pampering their dogs like this.

This is beyond the most stupid thing you can ever do and while I do know that there are people, who care more for their dog than their dying next door neighbor, this is beyond all logic. SNIF Tag is a way in which you would know every movement of your dog and its activities throughout the day by monitoring it on your system as the data is transmitted through its SNIF collar. The SNIF tag uses and accelerometer to guess what your dog is most likely doing and this information is transmitted to the base station wirelessly and then to you.

If your dog is out of the ‘coverage area’, then the information is stored in its collar and passed on to you when it is back. There is more to the SNIF tag though as when your dog passes another dog that is wearing a similar collar, they automatically become friends on their social networking pages. Then you can probably meet the cute owner of the dog and get together… or maybe not. The SNIF tag starter kit costs $200 for a limited time, and it costs $89 a year to access some unspecified “premium” online features.

Irrespective of what you do and how much your love your flea bag, if observing its live movement is a part of your day, then it is you who desperately needs social networking, not your dog. Trust me on that mate!
