Remember the last time you looked under your office desk and squirmed! A waste paper basket full of it. And the image of a tree being cut made you feel guilty! A Japanese company -Oriental, has made a machine called White Goat. Funny, unusual for a machine name, yes. It does something incredible though. Pop in about 40 sheets of paper, and wait for 30 minutes. What comes out is a nice toilet roll for your efforts.

While you waited, the machine has shredded the paper, after which the paper gets dissolved in water, thinned out, dried and wound into toilet rolls. Isn’t that great!

The company says it costs 10 Yen ($0.11) for a roll to get processed.

Regular usage of this machine can save 60 cedar trees annually. If your office wishes to sport that Eco Tag with aplomb, such a machine could help a great deal. It may not matter much then, that the machine weighs 600 kilos and is 1.8 metres tall. On roll-out, the machine will have a $ 100,000 price tag this summer. There’s no word on what happens to the ink on papers though.

The Consumer Electronics Show 2010 (CES) has been dominated by the environment, as more and more companies have introduced state of the art eco-friendly products, that have been designed to provide the high performance but with minimal power consumption. One such company is the Freelux North America, that has unveiled it latest product, EcoTouch Dimmer, that essentially dims the light of any CFL bulb attached to it, thus providing ambient illumination with less power consumption, thus saving valuable energy.

The EcoTouch Dimmer can support just about every CFL bulb available in the market as long as the bulb’s voltage consumption is restricted to 20 watts. The device works by analyzing and then responding to a user’s finger touch. The longer one keeps his finger on the pad, the dimmer the light gets and a short touch on the finger pad will switch off the bulb entirely.

Another essential device that has been introduced by Freelux is the Standby Indicator that gives the users an indication of vampire power is being used by their appliances. Vampire power is the amount of energy that is consumed by an electronic appliance when it is switched off, but is still plugged in an active power point. Although, this device is nothing new in the market, yet its importance cannot be undermined, as most of us simply forget to turn off the power of our appliances, especially the televisions and the mobile phone charges, when we are done.

Every time you buy a bottle of mineral water, you may assume that you are doing well to your body and self, and drinking clean water, which is free from germs and bacteria. However, have you ever thought about what happens to these plastic bottles once you throw them in the garbage bin? Well it goes to the garbage dump where it gets separated from the organic material and only 14% of these bottles get recycled.

The unaccounted 86% go straight to the soil and join the group of toxic substances that are not biodegradable. Unfortunately, millions of bottle are bought each day and most of these are never recycled and thus, you are being a part of the mechanism that encourage the buying and selling of plastic bottles which are environmentally very unfriendly.

However, if you decide to give this trivial matter a thought, you would realize that there are many options for you to discard the idea of using plastic bottles. One of which is the bizarre but intelligent 360 Paper Bottle that is sustainable, green and environmentally friendly. It is 100% recyclable and is non-toxic, food-safe and can store all kinds of liquid. If people decide to buy these paper bottles, the damage done to earth by plastic bottles can be greatly reduced.
