The LGBT community of India may not have realised but the ruling of the Delhi HC a couple days ago was not truly for the rainbow community. Not at all. It was intended for those who go with the flow in an attempt to look intellectual and ‘cool’ (people pretending to be anti-homophobic) and the uber religious who have yet another excuse to spread more hatred in a country already asphyxiating on loathing for one another (people pretending to be God’s special one). As anyone belonging to these two highly respected groups struggled to be heard, the media was only too happy to oblige. The viewpoints received thus may be taken as offensive and homophobic by some but once the tension ceases (if it ever does) one could have a field day laughing over some hilarious quotes.

Once the euphoria of the moment died for those who are a real part of the community, with opposition and threats rising from every side (mostly from caring and peace-loving religious groups) who are battling furiously right this minute to get rid of this unnatural ruling, the LGBTs of India have had to rely on the media to stop them from slipping back into depression. Keep an eye out and you can find enormous amounts of reading material that can give pleasure for hours. Starting with the Church group that have been sending mass SMSs asking their decent church-goers to boycott the HC decision, to the Muslim cleric who calls the decision barbaric (because stoning people, of course, isn’t), comments made mostly by the religious souls of this spiritual country have been the most worthy.

The best of all, however, comes from Yoga expert Baba Ramdev who insists homosexuals are ‘mentally ill’ individuals who require treatment at a hospital. Bless him for the love that flows so freely from the core of his being! Ramdev also adds that anything other than heterosexuality is a threat to the ‘family system’ which India is built upon. And yet, he has no qualms about those who choose to lead the life of a bachelor (like himself). Excuse me for being under the mistaken impression that bachelors do not contribute to the continuation of the species (who says we need to be married to reproduce, after all). I wonder if Ramdev proposes the use of aversive therapy or yoga for the treatment of this malicious ailment called homosexuality. Whatever his views on the treatment, Ramdev says he would come out onto the Delhi streets to protest the ruling. And so, we wait. Meanwhile, he and others, provide a fleeting cure for our depression.
