Europe is fast turning out to be a more than worthy rival for the pompous Middle East when it comes to green architecture and spectacular design, all being amalgamated into one singular astounding structure. The latest glassy crystalline wonder that is set to take center stage in the heart of German city of Düsseldorf is a prime example of these modern eco-marvels standing tall amidst concrete jungles. Conjured up by Daniel Libeskind for the design firm Kö-Bogen, the latest retail and shopping complex set for Düsseldorf is adored with a lavish green roof that enables it to save a fortune on both heating and cooling systems, as it acts as a perfect way to manage and maintain rainwater flow.

Connecting the two parts of the city and providing a perfect getaway for the early morning joggers, the rush hour office-goers and the leisurely folks who just wish to go around shopping and enjoying a perfect day, this green building is both efficient and effective, ensuring that it becomes the activity hub of Düsseldorf in the coming days. Located adjacent to the Hofgarten, Düsseldorf’s central park and the Rhine providing for a magnificient backdrop, the structure will be crafted from local limestone to ensure that it merges well with its historic surroundings.

Knowing German ingenuity, precision and craftsmanship, expect a world class eco-masterpiece standing tall in Düsseldorf in the near future.

During times of recession, it is natural for us to immediately dismiss “Sustainability and Green practices” as expensive options. But believe it or not, the Green Building market is finally poised to receive a much needed impetus in the construction industry.

Yes, a market slowdown can be good for the industry. In good economic times, there is no realistic connection between what the consumers, the builders, and the product manufacturers want. Consumers may want more green options, but builders may not have the expertise and manufacturers will not change if the current building materials are selling just fine.

But a slowdown gives companies not only the time to research new innovations but the financial incentive to seek new revenue streams. Consumer behavior is trending green, with 73% saying they would pay more for products that are better for the environment and 89% saying they’d pay more for products that will reduce heating and cooling costs, according to a survey by the Opinion Research Corporation. Making this vision a reality will also require many new “green collar” workers, further creating jobs and stimulating the economy.

So maybe THERE IS a Green lining behind the dark clouds towering the construction industry!

The XVI Chilean Architecture Biennial, a celebration of great Chilean architecture and along with the celebration or architecture and style, it showcased a marvelous green structure that could be the blueprint for many such future designs which are erected for temporary use. Designed by Assadi + Pulido, the green structure stood next to the old museum and incorporated in its construction various green aspects that made it an absolute delight. Its brilliant form and shining design were an example in innovative architecture and material recycling.

The eco-pavilion was built specially for the Biennial and is accessible by way of bridge from the interior of the MAC or from a staircase on the main square. The structure is enclosed in an Aluminum cage that is completely recyclable and sports interior art that is exhibited on cardboard structures that are easy to assemble and move. The uniqueness of this structure enables it to stand out from the mundane and the fact that 100 percent of the building materials would be recycled is surely the icing on the cake.

Eco-Pavilion appropriately displayed some of the best works from Chilean artists that were regarding energy and conservation. Material recycling was given utmost importance and this green edifice truly stood tall to hopefully inspire other such temporary structures when needed.
