It’s a universal fact that celebrities do not run out of news. The hot Hollywood couple Brangelina made a string of news about their near possible split. Interestingly, right after she returned, the actress quickly bought a 200 year old olive tree as a Valentine’s Day gift for Brad and it cost her $18,500.

The Hollywood hunk is sure to be pleased by this thoughtful gesture. It’s definitely a welcoming way of expressing love on Valentine’s Day. The expensive tree will be planted in the gardens of Chateau Miraval (their estate in the south of France). The actress bought it from a nursery called The English Garden Centre in Valbonne, which is near their house.

2010 Golden Globes awarded Martin Scorsese Lifetime Achievement Award for his spectacular contribution to the cinema. He was awarded Cecil B DeMille Award for his lifetime achievement in cinema. The Departed director received a standing ovation from the audience in the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s International Ballroom.

The award was handed over to Scorsese by an old friend and colleague Robert De Niro. The two worked together for the film Departed as well. This is what Robert De Niro had to say about his friend, Martin Scorsese. “Marty sleeps, drinks and eats film… I hear there are videos on the internet of Marty having sex with film,” He even added: “We’re like an old married couple. We built a life together, we have great memories-we just don’t sleep together anymore.” This was quite an explanation!

Leonardo Di Caprio who also worked with both Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese in the movie Departed introduced the award winner as someone who is not only a master filmmaker but also a patient teacher.

Avatar and the director of this blockbuster both bagged top awards of Best Film and Best Director at the glittering Golden Globe Awards Ceremony held at Beverly Hilton, Los Angeles.  James Cameron’s last blockbuster Titanic too had bagged best film and this award again endorses the cinematic genius of this great director.  Haiti’s tragedy loomed large on everyone’s mind at the award ceremony and celebrities, film fraternity showed solidarity with victims by wearing yellow, blue and red ribbons.

The awards function was hosted by Ricky Gervais who kept audience entertained throughout the ceremony. The best actress was bagged by Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side and Jeff Bridges took home the Globe for his brilliant portrayal of a country singer in Crazy Heart. Evergreen Julia Roberts won everyone’s heart when she was awarded Golden Globe for top actress in a comedy for her film Julie & Julia. Best animated movie and original score went to Disney’s Up. Martin Scorsese received lifetime achievement award for his brilliant contribution to the cinema.

It would be another one long year wait for another Golden Globe Award ceremony when celebrities, film stars and noted people of Hollywood will once again converge to celebrate the magic of cinema.

It’s just not the Hollywood but the entire world cinema that is going ga ga over James Cameron’s science-fiction epic “Avatar”. The best part of the movie is neither its special effects nor the highly dramatized creation of the movie per se, but the huge business it has done so far. Apparently, the movie has made $73 million domestically, $159.2 million overseas, making it to the whopping total of $232.2 million worldwide.

James Cameron and his distributors for sure must be dancing in millions. They deserve it undoubtedly though. 20th Century Fox, the distributor of the movie proclaimed that they made a good investment in the $400 million movie. Avatar is Cameron’s first narrative feature since the block buster “Titanic” released in 1997. Avatar may be seen as the epitome of digital 3-D projection.

However, Avatar missed the record for December debuts, which is set by Will Smith’s “I Am Legend”, released in 2007 with an opening of $77.2 million. It nevertheless, broke the record for a 3-D film opening, which was previously held by last summer’s “Up” with $68.1 million. Looks like the 10 footer blue-skinned aliens created by digital cameras have worked wonders for Cameron. Although you may not enjoy as much as “Titanic” it still is a must see movie!

One of the most prestigious entertainment magazines in the United States, Variety has announced that, come Thursday, the publication will feature only paid content on its website and free access will be disabled for all users. This latest move by Variety is aimed at generating greater revenues from advertising on the website along with the paid subscriptions. The transition is to be implemented slowly, where the website will require one out of every ten visitors to sign up for the paid subscription to get full access to the magazine.

The new business model will devoid Variety of the 2.5 million unique user visitations each month as the website will no longer be offering the free services that had made it so popular. However, the company plans to keep the five free page views a month and it seems that Variety would prefer to keep its half more than 50,000 paid subscribers, as against the million others who visit the website and get the content without any charges.

According to Neil Stiles (President, Variety Group),

“We fundamentally believe that the readers should pay one price and get all or any of our content. If you don’t pay, you don’t get anything.”

The company has created a user subscription model of $248 for an year’s wort access to the website’s content related that would be inclusive of the daily and weekly print editions along with applications designed specifically for the Apple iPhone. The website strongly believes that, the new pay model will be more effective and will help Variety generate better revenue figures than it does right now.

The movie is stuffed with melodrama and cheesy lines, shirtless men with rock-hard abs, pangs of sappy romantic love, dizzying camera work, racial stereotypes, occasional spurts of humor, love lessons for girls, passable soundtrack, doses of sex appeal, some neat fight sequences, comprehensible mythology, and philosophical musings. All in all, these are mostly what the imperative ingredients are for chick flicks marketed to teenage girls and twenty-something girlfriends. The movie phenomenon is largely a windfall of pop culture.

Definitely not a breakthrough literature, as some have claimed, Stephenie Meyer’s novels (two more Twilight movies coming up, it is said) are formula-structured romance novels – again, exactly the usual reading fare of young females. They have all the accoutrements of such a genre: sappy dialogue, play on emotions, and idealistic notions of love.

The film gets boring when it waxes philosophical, and asks some morality and ethics questions. Does a vampire have a soul? Huh? Hello. This is the part that loses the target audience who is just chewing the personification of myth. In front of the movie screen, the target audience is just still juggling the mental choice between vampires owning baser instincts like hungry animals of prey and some vampires, such as the Cullens, ‘striving for a socially acceptable way of dealing with their situation by “peacefully” coexisting with humans.’

Mighty heavy for the target audience to digest such notions as to whether a vampire has a soul when said audience might be prone to think that the mythical vampire can hardly be caught in existential dilemma.

When Edward inwardly agonizes with the ethical quandary of turning Bella into a vampire, his considerations are nowhere near moral or philosophical. His dilemma is between wanting to have her forever and not wanting to make her eat deer and keeping out of the sunlight for all eternity.

Stephenie Meyer does know her formula like the back of her hand.

If there is one singer who has class, style and all the characteristics that are expected of a celebrity of a certain status, it has to be Hilary Duff. She was recently seen shopping groceries at Bristol Farms in Beverly Hills.

She and her mother made a lovely pair as they walked up and down the aisles buying stuff that they needed. In fact, she looked less like a celebrity and more like an ordinary person, though I don’t mean that in a derogatory manner. She apparently was shopping for Thanksgiving and all that stuff the mother and daughter bought would be polished off by the extended family.

She has also recently finished her work for Gossip Girl and I would say, she would be thanking her stars this Thanksgiving. She is one of the most talented singers out there at this time and I am sure you would love to say “thank you” to entertainers like her who give their soul to their art and profession. Hilary Duff is one of the best selling artists lately even in Asian countries. We wish her a great Thanksgiving Day.

Tinkering with the design of nature and adding some clever accessories inside tiny little organisms might not be the brightest idea if you watched those countless Hollywood flicks where genetic engineering (eccentric mad-scientist styled stuff) goes horribly wrong.

But then this is real life and with the very real and growing demand for cleaner and more energy efficient fuel growing by the second, Joule Biotechnologies decided to fiddle with the genetics of tiny little algae to create a biofuel that will be effectively ‘carbon-neutral’. These genetically modified organisms use photosynthesis to directly create the molecules that form the basis of diesel; in other words they convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into fuel!

The advantage of the technology lies in the fact that the biofuel that is produced in this unique fashion will in turn release less amount of carbon dioxide when it burns, making the entire process effectively carbon-neutral. Joule Biotechnology plans to build farms of these modified organisms that are suspended in a solution and placed directly under sunlight.

So, unlike in the case of other biofuel sources, no irrigation land is wasted and food crops do not take a beating with this brand new technology. Just place them out in the vast desert wastelands and you could be milking fuel all day long… Of course, this now means that the US can now invade the Middle East for the desert land as much as for the oil wells!
