One of the most prominent names to come to mind, in case of household electrical appliances, Philips, has announced the release of an all new series of its immensely popular LivingColors Generation 2 lamps. The LivingColors series has been one of the most preferred and loved designer lamp series in the market, and the last line of these magnificent lamps had become an instant hit with the consumers.

Each lamp of the all new range of the LivingColors consists of only seven LEDs, that give an output of an awesome 16 million colors and also the brightness given out by the lamps has also been increased by 50%. The gorgeous lamps will be available in five models, that would range from Black, Crystal, White Glossy to Floral and Mineral.

The Generation 2 will consist of a standing lamp, a wall lamp, and two ceiling lamps. Furthermore, for the ease of use, the Generation 2 will come with a touch sensitive remote, so that users can control the light, from the comfort of their couch or beds. Although the launch date of Philips Generation 2 Lamps hasn’t been declared, yet the prices of the lamps will range from $226 to $353.

Driving and teenagers… That is one combination that seems to give sleepless nights to both authorities and parents alike. Yet, it is also one issue that is constantly overlooked and not attended to as well as issues such as DUI in the last few years. Car crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers in the UK today and with one-third of all accident related deaths across the globe involving those between the age group of 16 and 19, monitoring is a key issue indeed. Oren Musicant, an engineer at Ben-Gurion University in Israel has come with a nice and simple new method to keep this hazardous problem under check; at least to some extent.

In-vehicle data recorders (IVDRs) have been used by officials in the UK recently to monitor the driving patterns of teenagers and this data clubbed with new software has been used in developing an IVDR that lights up according to the driver’s performance and the degree of safety that is being followed. Green red and yellow LEDs are placed on a dashboard-mounted box and they constantly glow giving the driver an indication of the danger involved in his current driving style. So any sharp turns or undue acceleration and the red instantly lights up!

Researchers claim that this has shown positive results in tests while others still question its effectiveness. When you already know that going over the speed limit is not safe and consciously do it, will the red lights on the dashboard really stop you? A question that only time could answer…

Villages and woods are probably the only places in the world where greenery hasn’t become extinct yet. Even these are facing depletion these days. Considering this, the developers of a mixed-use urban village, Mueller in Austin, Texas wished to preserve the lush green surroundings barring its industrial feel. And that is how Austin got its Largest Public Art Installation, the Sunflower Electric Garden.

Comprising 15 flower-like solar photovoltaic panels, this solar garden is situated between the village of Mueller and Austin’s highway I-35 on a pedestrian and bike path. The solar flowers sop up the sun’s energy during daytime to generate a steady flow of renewable electricity to power their blue LED lights at night and divert the remaining to the grid. Not just this, these installations also provide shade to the pedestrians and bikers from the hot sun.

On the word of its creators, Harries/Heder, these flowers are believed to be both an icon for the sustainable, LEED certified Mueller Development and a highly visible metaphor for the energy conscious City of Austin. This surely is a rousing example for the metros to turn environmental and aesthetic.

Moment Factory is a company dedicated to Architainment, which really means using architecture to entertain; and it also won a Grand Prix Créativité Montréal 2008 in the category Urban integration. This enthusiastic group has recently outdone itself with a cool new Interactive LED Wall in Montreal, Canada. The installation had various tracking devices and low-resolution LED displays that together are capable of showing some spectacular different types of visualization that are inspired by the presence and movement of people.

We are told that some 35,000 LED bulbs have been used to make this little architectural venture which has now permanently been installed at the La Vitrine Cuturelle and can be seen in its splendor every evening from 7 to 11 pm.

Seen as an attempt to redefine the traditional architectural facade, the work done by Moment Factory has been applauded all over the place. And since La Vitrine is such a popular tourist spot, the one behind the project are sure that the Interactive LED Wall will be an added treat for those who come the La Vitrine way.
