Setting up each SolarClover would only take a few minutes and the whole thing weighs less than 13 pounds so transferring them from one place to another would be a piece of cake.

Many attempts have been made so far to perk up the efficiency of the biggest green resource earth boasts of- the Sun. Another discovery lining up for this effort is the “nanostructure films” created by the chemical engineers at Oregon State University (OSU). What makes this discovery unique is that it can be applied on any surface to increase the amount of sunlight the surface captures.

This latest nano-technology can be put to everyday use by applying it on sunglasses where it cuts down the amount of light that is reflected off the glass surface and allows it to go through, giving clearer vision and diminishing glare. This would do more good to the existing solar panels by capturing more photons than reflecting them into space. This would mean generating more electricity with the same old solar panels fixed on your roof. Sounds economical, right?

It seems that the only thing that is more creative these days than the products conceived by designers is the names that they carry. The latest in this line is the ‘UVonion’; a cool and elegantly styled lighting device that not just charges up using solar panels but also emits UV light to dispense your interiors of germs. Sterilizing your home, keeping it healthy and running on green energy are the prime concerns of the UVonion. Designed by industrial designer Yun Li the idea of the UVonion is to ensure that the sterilizing properties of the sun are carried into your home’s interiors.

Powered by a solar panel and an internal rechargeable battery that spend the entire day outside charging themselves, UVonion uses an ultraviolet LED lighting to dispense that energy at night. A full day’s charge will most likely give you more than enough juice in the batteries to keep the UVonion going all night long. While the design is ergonomic and the process sleek, it is the conversion of clean energy into an air sterilization concept that has really caught our attention and could ensure that the UV onion makes its way into quite a few eco conscious homes. It can be a real had world out there for an up and coming entrepreneur. In case you are not willing to take our word on it then just ask ITP student Ohad Folman. The guy just spent 3 hard months of work tricking out a Burton Wheelie Flight Deck rolling suitcase, putting on a Duracell PowerSource Mobile 100 external battery pack, a stepper motor, multimeter to display battery life and a Burton Solar Rolls panel. In short, he created a suitcase that can create power by charging from the rolling friction that its wheels dish out and the solar panels that are on top- two sources of clean energy. Yet he still has trouble convincing major makers like Samsonite to pick up on this green strolley.

The batteries on this thing are capable of storing a charge that should be able to power up your laptop for a odd hour and a half and that means you can most likely fully charge your mobile on this. Ohad feels that a fully prepped out solar-kinetic suitcase will go for around $450 while other versions are possible including a kid-version that will not cost beyond $250. We surely hope the designer is more successful in selling his ideas to big shots as we are sure sold on this green carrier!

Taiwan has just completed building what is being touted as the largest solar-powered stadium in the world. Though the original name is not known yet, it is called ‘World Games Stadium’ in English. It comes with massive and gigantic solar panels which harness all the solar energy in order to generate electricity that could be used by the stadium.

It has a 14,155 square meter roof and it harnesses about 1.4 gigawatt hours of electricity every year. The coolest part of the stadium is that when the stadium is not being used, 80% of the neighborhood where the stadium is located can also be powered through the electricity generated for the stadium on days when the stadium is not in use.

This seems certainly like the most interesting concept ever. Let me change the word. This is no more a concept but is a true and working model which can be imbibed by other nations and governments when they build stadiums meant for thousands of people. It would not only save energy, but also make sure the world is cleaner and greener place.

The summer is soon approaching and it is not common to hear reports about people being sun burned or even fainting in the heat. In such extreme weather, you would need to take good precaution to ward off ill effects f the sun. In addition, summers ca be extremely unpleasant and uncomfortable if you do not wear a hat.

When you ca wear a hat, and when it is summer, why not use solar energy to create some wind for yourself? A Chinese company thus manufactured these Solar hat Fans which are basically hats with a fan fixed that work using solar energy.

A rather nifty idea I must say. The hat has a mono photovoltaic panel, which harvests all the solar energy into your fan which is fixed to the hat. You would never faint not feel hot. However, you will certainly look like an idiot. The Solar hat fa costs just $10 and I guess you must pick it up.

There is absolutely nothing that can dampen the green revolution and solar energy wave that is hitting the world at the moment; not even a bit of soaking in rain! KDDI and Sharp have announced that they will be bringing waterproof solar panel technology into our lives by unleashing the world’s very first solar-powered mobile that will not be hampered by slightly damp conditions. The waterproof solar panel technology has been in the developing stage for quite a while now and this will be its very first commercial use for mobiles.

Sharp at this point promises to deliver a mobile that will allow you to talk for a minute or give 2-hours of standby after just 10 minutes of charge under the sun. While no other specifications are yet out, it is almost certain that this will be a basic phone with no major power-sucking features so that the pressure on the charging unit is kept simple. We will have to wait till at least this June to get our hands on it though!

Looks like the economic crisis hasn’t spared even the superlatives. The ace car manufacturer, Toyota Motor Corp. has suffered its first-ever operating loss in 70 years because of the slashing U.S. market and mounting yen. To make up for the loss, Toyota is reportedly working on a secret solar vehicle to accompany its former hybrid Prius and Camry models.

The solar vehicle project on which Toyota is alleged to have been working on consists of two stages. Firstly, an electric vehicle designed by the company will gain a part of its power from solar cells set on the car that can be recharged from the solar panels fitted on residential rooftops. Later, it plans to develop a mold that is powered by solar cells in-toto. The project is now using solar panels enough to power 500 homes and occupies an area equivalent to 60 tennis courts. According to Toyota, this would cut down carbon dioxide emissions by 740 tons an year and save about 1,500 barrels of crude oil.

Though considering the present scenario the car would years to make its first appearance on roads, Toyota doesn’t desire to cut back on its environmental research and is proving to be a leader in green technology. I appreciate its act of courage and concern for environment and wish the project became a success.
