Bram Stoker’s Dracula based on Vlad the Impaler is well known to every fan of vampires but slightly less known is the legend of the Vlamescu tribe created by writer John Saul. Saul depicts vampires, led by Romanian born Anton Vlamescu, as daywalkers who suck the living juices or energy from humans for their survival. This allows them to stay forever young and also makes them extremely attractive to humans whilst also invoking fear in the mortal souls.

Whether you believe in the Stoker, Saul, or some other version of what vampires are, the creatures remain shrouded in mystery making them a fascination, especially for those who attempt at delivering entertainment. The use of allegory to tell stories of a sensitive nature is not new in art forms and the film, Lesbian Vampire Killers, reeks of it to the point of contempt. The comedy horror film tells the story of two male ‘losers’ who, while on a trekking camp, try to save a group of young girls from lesbian vampires bent on making the girls their meals.

The lesbian vampires want nothing more than to get rid of the guys and transform the pretty girls into vampires. It’s interesting to note that the movie, which has already been released in a few countries, depicts the vampires as sex-hungry and violent, wishing only to enslave the girls to fulfil their carnal desires. Vampires are believed to evoke fear and even respect, not disgust. Could it be possibly that they have been shown this way only because the movie tells the story of homosexual vampires? No wonder the film has angered lesbians already.

Lesbian Vampire Killers also shows how the women are saved, in part, by the power of the Church (that no doubt invoked the power of the Father and the Holy Ghost) to safely deliver the girls into the arms of the waiting men. The implication that the girls are safe only with straight men (even complete losers) is unsavoury, to say the least, and downright unacceptable when the men enjoyed watching the vampires making out. This mimics what one usually sees in real life; it is strange how most straight people who rant about the unnaturalness of homosexuality have no problem watching two people of the opposite sex making out. Those who wish to see some nude bodies and get excited by cheap thrills would enjoy the movie; it has been deemed extremely funny by the groups of males whose ultimate sexual fantasy is watching girls making out. If you are looking for a true horror with a good story line (or one that doesn’t insult any minority group) then this isn’t for you; you would most probably find it offensive.

According to folklores blood sucking vampires rule the night world seeking vengeance. The myth and mystique of vampires have inspired many novels, poetry, more recently movies and even a HBO serial. Vampires have been box-office hits too. So no wonder vampires have now started haunting the virtual world too!

Vampire related websites have gained popularity and vampires related pages have dedicated followers on Facebook and Myspace too. People are getting hooked to online vampire wars. The official Twilight movie site had 553,000 visitors in June 2009 alone. HBO’s second season campaigning of True Blood series focused more on online advertising too. It hired Digital Kitchen to design the campaign. The campaign was a great success.

Is all the advertising and buzz making vampires popular? Or are the film makers and storytellers, new media and the marketing world cashing in on the myth and popularity of blood sucking mysterious vampires? For the advertising world vampires must be inspirational for their creative teams too.

Whatever it is vampires have found new hunting grounds in the online world and are lurking people away into imaginative dark world. This new trend is good news too – we all need a break from boring real world!

Vampires are usually revered but rarely are they popular amongst the lowly human species. A bite from a vampire results in the victim becoming an obedient slave; often, the obedience may reach the point of obsession. These irresistible creatures may be envied by everyone but few wish to become like them.

And then came Robert Pattinson who changed it all. Undeniably one of the most good looking vampires to date, Pattinson lends credibility to the phrase ‘love at first bite’. After all, who can deny this hunk of a man from nsinking his fangs into their jugular veins and sucking them dry? Most of us have had gothic dreams of Pattinson feasting on our exposed neck, or of kissing his lips. Some of us have been lucky. Under the guise of a charity event, amFAR’s Cinema Against AIDS, Pattinson auctioned off kisses on his cheek. If it takes $3000 to spend a week with Julia Roberts, turns out it takes $28,000 to kiss this most-wanted vampire. And it wasn’t even the real tonguing lip-locking stuff; the Twilight star only auctioned off two ‘pecks on the cheek’ which went to two lucky girls (whose names should not be revealed, lest Rob’s fans decide to murder them).

Other famous names who managed to raise some money at the charity event were Joshua Jackson, Diane Kruger, Bill Clinton, Hayden Panattiere, and Josh Hartnett. Hartnett even offered to strip for the event but, unfortunately, things never get that good.

Highgate Cemetery was a fashionable and stylish burial place for the Victorians and was built in 1839. The cemetery started to decay by 1960s and a couple of vampire sightings were reported. While skeptics have continued to ridicule the idea of vampires existing, the place has been known to house evil beings that are sinister and scary. Many people who walked at night near the graveyard have reported a sudden cold breeze that seems to freeze them.

An unidentified person reported being attacked by a dark figure that had vampire like teeth and she fought him away and the figure disappeared into the walls. The sightings have been consistent and many analysts point out that though the “evil beings” may not be supernatural, the sightings are definitely true and not faked up.Nevertheless, Highgate Cemetery is still a beautiful and charming graveyard.

This brings us to another perspective which reveals the fact that there could be cults within graveyards who suffer from a sort of collective madness and scare people at night and attack them by placing corpses in cars or biting unwary pedestrians. Certainly, the existence of vampires cannot be ruled out but at the Highgate cemetery, it seems like the work of evil humans. Vampires are known to wander the mountains of Transylvania and the Balkans.

They walk quietly in the dead of the night, knowing the streets would be closed for them during the bright light of the day. Their skin is pale and, like cadavers, they seem to deserve no place in the warmth of any society. They move from place to place but no matter where they go they don’t fit it except with their own kind. Cursed forever, ostracized by humanity, they walk alone.

Vampires are a misunderstood breed that seem to occupy the dreaded position below that of cannibals in the minds of most humans. A world that bows its head to bullies seems not to have forgiven this special breed for their desire to survive and believe that they, too, deserve to live. How different are vampires from us, after all, when the only time they attack another living being is to feed when hungry. Are they at fault for their dietary needs? Let The Right One In, written and produced by John Nordling, is a Swedish movie that attempts to show us unworthy humans that humanity is a trait not exclusive to us. The movie revolves around the blossoming romance between a human boy of 12 and a vampire girl forever frozen in the same age. As the girl encourages the boy to stand up for himself against bullies, the boy learns to look beyond the title of Vampira and asks her to be his lady love.

Perhaps the movie to be released in December would manage to clear some of the stigma surrounding this royal breed. Rightfully occupying a position higher than humans in the food chain, it is shocking that vampires are spoken of with more revulsion than fear when we preach so loudly about treating all species with love and respect.

Vampires for long have fascinated me and I have dreamed of visiting sinister chapels and abandoned churches all across Wallachia and Transylvania. And like my role models, I have detested the smell of garlic too and it is almost fatal for me to smell the pungent root. Joe recently came across these obnoxious Garlic Mints, which are meant to send my role models back to their dusty coffins.

These foul smelling garlic mints come in a gothic tin and look as depressing as a day at the front seat of a church. I always have wondered why people have hated vampires and why they would need ‘vampire repellants’. It totally is unfair to target a well-meaning, peace-loving breed that believes in the principle of pleasure and blood.

Every time a product like this is launched, I get that sinking feeling and I curse the humanity for being so unkind to vampires, who make excellent lovers and companions. By now, you must all have guessed I belong to the breed of blood thirsty vampires and if you would a seductive vampire as a lover, you know you wouldn’t want to spend $4.95 to buy these lethal Garlic Mints and ruin the chances of a date with a vampire. Joe perhaps feels the same way too, and warns of the effects these vampire repelling Garlic Mints can have on your social life.

Depressed as I am, I can swear upon my cloven hooves for that.

In a new era of scientific development, the vampires succeeded only be legendary monsters to become ordinary citizens.

This change, which happened the day to night, is due to Japanese scientists, who invented a synthetic blood, which meant that humans would not be their main dish.

Humans still do not feel completely safe living side by side with all the legion of vampires that is coming out of their coffins. Around the world, each chose their side for or against this revolution, but in a small town in Louisiana, people are still forming his opinion.

Sookie, a small coffee shop waitress, has the power to hear the thoughts of people and sees no problems in integrating these new members to society, especially when it comes to Bill Compton, an attractive vampire of 173 years of age.

That is precisely the factor that makes this series so interesting. In this universe of fiction, is quite interesting to note the issues they bring with them vampires. Will (or should) they be accepted as citizens?

Like the X-Men brought to light the question of mutants and humans, Alan Ball (creator of “Six Feet Under”) makes the same issue, but rather than mutants, vampires.

Definitely, must-see.
