Water Conservation At Its Best" width="600" height="502" />

Our planet is in peril, with the global warming, rising temperature, the threat of the depletion of natural resources among many other environmental concerns. However, one of the most disturbing of all scenarios is that of the unavailability of water, one of the founding elements of all life. Therefore, environment conservation groups and governments alike are trying their best to educate people about the need for water conservation.

Most of the people believe that conserving water could be an expensive proposition and that, it would cost the a great deal of money if they tried to set up some sort of an apparatus that, could help in water conservation. However, there are other more subtle ways to achieve the goal, without having to shed a single cent. Infact, these steps would in turn only help people in saving money on their water consumption bills.

We all can save upto an impressive 60 gallons of water each day, if we just time and limit our water consumption levels. For starters, we can opt for a five minute shower, instead of a ten minute one. Most people tend to stay long in showers, enjoying the cozy and comfortable feeling of a stress relieving shower. However, those long durations, only add up to the water consumption and also wastes a lot of it. Thus, just five minutes in a shower, could help you clean yourself and at the same time, save a lot of water as well, upto 12.5 gallons a day.

Well, shaving and brushing teeth is something, that we all do everyday and without even us knowing, we in turn waste a lot water, as when we brush our teeth or shave, we tend to leave the water running, more as a habit than negligence. But, if we keep the faucets off while we do our daily business, it would help save a lot of water, that would amount to about 8 gallons a day for each of us. Also, people should not ignore the leaking taps and pipes as they waste a lot of H2O, which in turn can be conserved and be put to more important tasks. Hence, taking care of the leakages at that very moment, would help save upto 5 gallons of water each day.

With water scarcity taking its toll from the world’s population, we need to discover means of conserving it. The designers Joel Williams, Claire Finch, Alexander Archer-Todde, Ethan Mcquillan, Liam Smith and Joel Neild have attempted to do this as a part of their student project through their very unique bathroom . Taking its name from Roca, a company branded for its fabulous bathroom products, this bathroom conserves water in the following ways…

Revitalize: A shower unit that makes use of a tactile sensors on its floor panel, which guide water only to the place where the user stands, thereby preventing water wastage.

Rebathe: A small and cozy bath unit where the touch sensitive wall tiles manipulate the water and divert the used dirty water to flush the toilet.

Refresh: A statuette convex mirrored sink comprising hot and cold sensitive foot tiles, which prevent the incessant flow of water.

The bathroom has soft and faint mood lighting that creates a soothing milieu for the user to drive his filth and fatigue away without wasting water thus blending the aesthetic taste of its designers with their commendable concern for environment.

Mehek Sharma is a talented designer who has created the ‘Amend’. Amend is a unique device that lets you use the old psychological theories to help you save water and energy. It uses the principle of rewards and punishment in order to help you save water and electricity. It measures your monthly water and electricity consumption and if you use less energy and water, you get a Green Card.

This Green Card would be provided by the government and you would be able to use the card to purchase goods at a lower rate. This situation is very relevant to India where the government issues Green Cards to people who are poor. However, it is not meant only for India.

If you use more energy and water, you get negative points and you will be fined as a punishment. Amend is an interesting concept but governments need to pay attention to such cool concepts. If this were to be employed in India, corrupt government officials would make the user’s life hellish.

Hughie from Australia has designed a biodegradable plastic kitchen sink that lets you reuse water. Most of the countries in the world suffer from severe water shortage and in such a case, using kitchen sinks that let us use water again are a blessing indeed. The Removable Kitchen Sink is a wonderful product that captures almost 80% of used water which would otherwise go down the sewer. This water could be used in the garden or even to wash your car.

This sink is green and lightweight and makes an excellent choice for those who are renovating their houses. You could use the sink to bathe your pets, watering the plants and many other things. In fact, you could carry the sink to wherever you go, on hiking, boating, camping etc. Only, it might get a little cumbersome to carry something a little large.

The Hughie Sink is an amazing product hat every eco conscious person must buy. The Hughie Sink costs $25 and is money well spent. The next time you are planning to buy something to save water, you know what you need to buy. Don’t you?

Rainwater harvesting is big business these days and it is especially so in places where rain is abundant. Most of the rain that falls down is either wasted or unutilized. Chris Buerckner has designed the Watree, which acts as a receptacle for channeling all the rainwater to a place where it can be saved and stored for dry days. The accumulated water is stored in a tank under the surface of the earth and can be used later when required.

The receptacle resembles an inverted umbrella and is intended to allow the harvesting of rain to take place easily. This would definitely help people to save water and limit the wastage of potable water, which happens almost all the time. However, rainwater-harvesting solutions are not new and there have been man already, which is set up at key locations.

What makes Watree unique is its ability to be functional and also look good at the same time. I would be interested to install the Watree in every community so that people do not have to worry about draughts and lack of rain, which is very common across the drier states in the U.S.

The simple law of condensation has allowed a Canadian company, Element Four to develop a gadget that produces water out of thin air. The gadget uses a technology, which is similar to that of a de-humidifier. The Water Mill aims to help millions of people who currently face a severe shortage in water. Producing about 12 liters of water in a day, the Water Mill is green and eco-friendly too.

The device consumes power equivalent to that of 3 bulbs and is a better alternative to existing water distribution systems. Analysts estimate that it may cost around 20 pence produce a liter of water. The device itself is estimated to cost 300 Pounds and would measure 3ft wide. Looks like we shall finally have a solution to the ever-present problem of water shortage.

This would not only help developed countries to have an alternative to bottled water but even developing countries can make use of the gadget, where people suffer from draughts and where people lack clean drinking water. Inventor Jonathan Ritchey definitely needs to be applauded and congratulated for such a great invention.
