The International Whaling Commission has been unsuccessful in imposing a complete ban on whaling. Some countries such as Japan have invoked their right to continue catching whales supposedly for research studies. In the Pacific, there used to be hundreds of thousands in whale population. There were once nearly 100,000 grey whales. The numbers have terribly dwindled today. Sustained fishery of whales from the bays and inlets of the English Channel, as early as the onset of the Middle Ages, is a practice that began in the 9th century.
