Taj under fire

Hundreds are still trapped in two renowned elite hotels in Mumbai. The hostage drama is still far from over. Though many people have been rescued from Taj Hotel yet the encounter is not over. Rescue efforts are still going on at Trident-Oberoi where nearly 200 people are trapped since last night. This is one of the worst terror attacks seen by the city, by the country and the world.

The attackers are trained commando type terrorists and the operation is well-planned and unfortunately well-executed too. It seems they all are very young and can be easily mistaken to be typical college going urbanite, casually dressed in jeans and t-shirts with Ak-47/Ak-57 slung along with backpacks full of ammunition. These are men on a mission, who do not fear death and hence very dangerous. It is feared that many more terrorists may be at large in the city.

Mumbai and many other cities in India have faced terrorist attacks in last few months. Yet administration and security situation remains vulnerable and weak. Densely populated cities have become soft targets for terrorist attacks. Once the hostage drama ends, body counts are over, political speeches condemning attacks become stale, media packs it bags and leaves to chase other developing or breaking news and the cities seem to return to normal, there is another worse terror attack all over again. This is shocking. This is sad day indeed for India and the world.

The hard reality is that in spite of ‘war on terror’, in spite of various intelligence and security agencies terrorist outfits are growing powerful and spreading across the world. They are hijacking ships on side of the globe and they are crossing seas to attack other side. They have arms and ammunition. They are handful yet they are managing spread terror and fear all over the globe. Has it really become impossible to uproot these evil forces from face of the earth? Who are they? What do they want? What purpose does it serve to kill innocent civilians? Can’t there be any negotiations with them? These brave youths are clearly being brainwashed to kill innocents and kill themselves. What is this great mission? Efforts must be made to engage these militant outfits in continuous dialogue. ‘War on Terror’ has boomeranged very badly not just on America but on the whole world.

It is a very sad realisation.

Sad is not the word. It is beyond that, and my heart bleeds for those who died in Bombay. And I find it almost a disgrace to call the attack Indian 9/11. It is like saying these deaths were less important that the ones that died then, with due respect to them. It is a shame how Indians try to draw parallels with American events and feel good about it.
