A day after the gruesome attacks in Mumbai, political analysts and critics have tried to make sense of what happened and why it happened. However, the answers are murky and it definitely wouldn’t be prudent to discuss possibilities that can’t be confirmed. Overnight Mumbai has been turned in to a war zone that has consumed more than a hundred lives.
Yet again, an Islamic terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Kashmir issue and the general sense of alienation among the Muslim youth have contributed to the growing influence of mujahideen and jihad activists. The terrorists succeeded in carrying out the well-planned attack and the motive now has been assumed to be to destabilize the nation’s security and economy.
Terrorist attacks in India have largely been the work of fundamental Islamic organizations. However, a Hindu terrorist attack was reported recently too. Perhaps, religions would always rear their ugly heads and cause many more deaths and destruction. The thesis statement of religions encouraging fundamentalism which in turn cause terrorist attacks have been proved again and again, with tragic consequences.
Overt displays of religious sentiments and practices may perhaps be illegitimated. However, in a country where religion has a strong influence over the masses, such a move would not be found acceptable among anyone except a few educated elite. Religion aside, the global war on terror could have had an effect on the tragic events of last night.
In the end, most terrorist attacks have religion at the back of their minds and instead of attacking any single religion; we must understand that all religions have inadvertently contributed to violence, death and destruction. Most wars have been fought on the basis of religions. Before humanism prevails, many more lives will be lost and destroyed. The only solution to today’s global war on terror is to discourage people from overt expressions of religious behaviors, and advocate equality and humanism amongst the masses.

Religion will kill the world one day, it seems. I am ashamed at the inhumanity of man.
Religion is a powerful tool to recruit young people, generate funds and give a cause to fight and kill. Very shocking and unfortunate that these handful terrorists have become so powerful. Only politicians are to blamed to bring world to a brink of abyss and chaos.
Yep, you right about terrorism functioning like a business organisation. C’mon I was shocked to hear of ‘Deccan Mujahiddin’, as if it’s the South Indian branch looking after terror in that region. Then few day back, there was news that youngsters in Kerala were converting to Islam for a job as a terrorist and bringing huge monetary returns home.
Hello MadKat and Saba, thanks for your comments. It pains me to see so many deaths in the name of the book which was written thousands of years ago. What we need are not books but a sense of humanity, which would allow us to respect fellow human beings, and acknowledge their right to live.
And Saba, people are really getting converted to Islam to eke out a living as a terrorist? You have brought a completely new perspective. Conversions to earn money from terrorism. Perhaps you could tell us more about it! I am interested!
Jesus taught PEACE and gave us an example of it. “Love your enemies and PRAY for those who persecute you.” Launched in request to a plea for help, (but later turned sour) the Crusades ENDED almost 1000 years ago.
Contrast that with The “Prophet” who taught that it is right to kill your enemies – because they are enemies of God. Over 130 suras advocate that violence be directed against other people. Jihad has been going on for over 1300 years now.
Where is the balance in your perspective?
Not all religions are violent; evil people with much to gain are violent.
No religion is violent, Will. Only people are. The Bible or the Quran or a tell-all book on nuclear weapons do not kill people. HUMANS bent on selling their beliefs are the murderers, not the religions.
Will, we do not need anybody to teach peace. Religions have always preached their way of thinking is the only right way. That is absolutely wrong. Religion is an instrument through which violence is justified. Christianity has had its share of violence. What would you say of native tribes of South America and elsewhere who were eliminated and tortured by the Christian missionaries? In fact, violence goes much deeper than that.
Rizmyn, Islam does state that those who are not believers need to be eliminated if they don’t become believers. Isn’t that why ‘infidels’ like Hindus, Christians, Jews, Baha’i, Atheists, Agnostics, Humans are killed? Because they do not share the same beliefs?
The only solution to violence is humanism and non religiousness. Atheism is a saner option.
Religion does not choose our way of life. We do that completely on our own. Whether we’re Atheists, Muslims or Satanists, taking another’s life is OUR decision. What does it matter what our faith is? Our beliefs can be kept aside. Religion becomes a filthy word only when we use it as a slogan to justify our own twisted desires. After all, people also murder in the name of love, heavy metal music and when under influence. Should these be banned, too?
Love, heavy metal music, and substance abuse has not led to massacres, wars, genocides, pogroms and holocausts. Perhaps a good book on history would reveal the facts to you. All the violence and atrocity that has been committed all these years has been due to religions. If you still refuse to believe it, you are in denial. Religion DOES choose the way of most people. Period.
Not denial. It’s more like I don’t believe Einstein was at fault for what happened to Japan even though all that suffering can be traced back to him. Period!
Einstein did something useful and I don’t think religions have done any good. Okie keep hoping for the great good that will never happen as all humans will be annihilated in the name of religion and god. Indeed, religion is a boon to mankind!
And when you compare religion and genocides to Einstein and feel good that it is in no way responsible to all the mass murders and wars, you are just proving my point, you ARE in denial.
The comparison was to show that anything can be taken either in the right or wrong way. It’s up to us to make that choice. But of course, since I have defended religion, now you will beconvinced I am soon going to come after you with a sledgehammer and beat you into oblivion. Lol!
I wish you all the best in your spiritual and religious endeavours but my heart bleeds for those who kill. And the murderers are always religious. Go figure!
And I defended religion, not the murderers. And all murderers are not religious people. And all atheists are not humane. And..
Fi fi Fo Fum Do I smell a religious fundamentalist?
Oooh…oh yeah, totally. Lock Your doors tight tonight. By the way, do you have OCD :p
Yeah yeah!
