Here is something interesting that will happen at Spoon and Tomago’s preview of the Good Design Awards that will be held at the end of the month. This event will feature an expiring date label concept, Fresh Label by TO-GENKYO, a Japanese design studio. This highly modernized modern device will actually track the expiry date of foods by using a universally recognizable visual. It is interesting to learn how this device works. It changes the color of the food based on the level of ammonia the food emits as it ages.
When the food passes its expiry date, the barcode is no longer readable. This means the food cannot be sold anymore. This is indeed a welcoming change and all thanks to civilization and the modern technologies for bringing in something like this. Tampering with expiry dates is virtually an intrinsic part of doing business by most food companies. The consumers have been cheated time and again by selling them the expired food.
This not only deteriorates the health of the consumers but also makes them paranoid about buying any foods from outside. However, it still doesn’t guarantee that the food companies will be honest enough to stop tampering the expiry dates of the food. However, it would make more sense if old foods are sold at a cheaper rate. This is fair enough as the consumers know what they are purchasing.
