The great modern-day dilemma: shampooing everyday

the habit of daily shampooing1 The great modern day dilemma: shampooing everyday

Thanks to modern chemistry, ‘scientists developed surfactants to remove dirt efficiently while leaving a soft feel.’ This new revolution led to a billion-dollar industry and the so-called ‘shampoo wars.’

Dermatologists say that we do not need to shampoo everyday, and that the ‘necessity for shampoo varies from person to person, depending on your hair type and what you put in to your hair each day.’

We have heard stories about some valid concerns that some shampoos ‘contain potentially harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin’ such as sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, propylene or butylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, and coal tar. Now, that’s a lot more dirt than dust and sebum on your scalp.

Animal studies point to the possibility that if humans absorb enough of these chemicals found in some shampoo formulations, the skin might eventually be damaged, and worse, might lead to the damaging of other organs.

If you don’t wish to go the way of homemade alternatives to shampoo such as baking soda, vinegar, egg, lemon, and other such stuff that you can find in your cupboard, for fear of smelling like food, your best bet is to opt for any of the various all-natural shampoos that are being sold these days, as well as shampooing your hair just a few times a week.
