The Myth Of Rational Homophobia And Irrational Homosexuality

There is no rest, no respite. Since the Delhi HC verdict decriminalising homosexuality not a day goes by without someone throwing a tantrum and demanding the return of the infuriating law; it appears the homophobic of this country are even more obsessed with homosexuality than the LGBTs! The most interesting thing about these oppositions are people quoting religious scriptures and ‘scientific proof’ while calling themselves sane and logical when they are the farthest from this.

Yet another article has surfaced highlighting the reasons why homosexuality is unnatural and a blind acceptance of Western culture that allows humans to experience their uncontrolled lusts against the wishes of The Creator. The writer, Burhanuddin Qasmi, titles his thoughts ‘A Rational Approach Towards Same-Sex Unions’ but his views are anything but rational.

Along with the many quotes from different religions (read, Abrahamic) and other sources, the writer doesn’t truly have anything new to add that we haven’t heard before. His arguments are biased to the point of being repugnant and far from rational; at one point he likens homosexual desires to that of child sexual abuse. It is mildly humorous to note that Qasmi’s rants are mostly about the unnaturalness of sodomy (yes, he cited the story of Sodom on cue) but never once spoke of the innate attraction between two individuals of the same sex, or love, or even the troubling deceitfulness of living a lie whilst struggling to live a forced straight life.

In his extremely well thought out critique, Qasmi claims that homosexuality has been criminalized for centuries in most countries of the world because no liaison between two individuals of the same sex could lead to natural procreation. This must certainly be the reason why the same countries that criminalise homosexuality also severely punish barren women, DINKS, and even those who take vows of celibacy! Qasmi probably applauds the number of straight people who reproduce and then go on to abuse their children as he berates individuals who wish to raise a child with their gay partner. Not surprisingly, the article also touches upon the issue of HIV and the spread of the virus amongst gays of the country but feigns ignorance of the fact that it isn’t homosexuality but unsafe sex that is the problem (the same way it spreads amongst straight individuals?)

Qasmi’s article is extensive (4,622 words!) but it can be narrowed down to one word: meaningless. His continuous references to homosexuality as a lifestyle that one chooses and calling homosexuality insane and inhuman illustrate his intolerance and unjust hatred towards this group of people in Baba Ramdev-like fashion. Misguided and deluded individuals can always be educated, what cannot be endured in any individual is chauvinistic ignorance.

These are just a few thoughts that spring to mind upon reading his article but I fear I have already proven myself heretical and shall restrict myself before I commit any more blasphemy and lead the intellectual Qasmis of the world to suicide. Plus, he quoted but misinterpreted Michel Foucault in his tirade and I don’t want to be the person who tells him that Foucault lived with his gay partner, Daniel Defert, until his death!
