Drugs is a huge issue in Mexico. For the past year alone, approximately 5,000 deaths occurred in the name of drugs. The country is a very strategic transshipment point for narcotics. There are also thriving illegal drug production and distribution networks in Mexico. The state of drug proliferation in the country has reached an alarming rate. The country breathes dope.
Drug trafficking in Mexico has given rise to narcoterrorism and narco-politics. It is a narco-society, and while unmeasured may also be a narco-economy. The arrest of a former beauty queen, Laura Elena Zuñiga Huizar, shows at what level narcotics has permeated Mexico’s culture. Drug traffickers are practically running the country, and neatly evading accountability for their criminality.
When Mexico’s Miss Hispanic America was arrested, she was found with two AR-15 assault rifles, three pistols, nine ammunition clips, more than 600 rounds of ammunition of different calibers, 16 cell phones, and about $53,000 in cash. She was apprehended while in one of two SUVs carrying a posse of 7 other drug traffickers. When questioned by the police, the 23-year-old beauty titlist simply said that she and her companions were planning to go on a shopping trip to Bolivia and Colombia.
Mexico is entirely to blame for the fate it brought upon itself. Drugs is like a stench that cannot be erased. Once drugs has permeated the communities, it is close to impossible to rid those places of the illegal trade. When narcotics enters a place, it is surely there to stay. No wonder the illegal drug situation in Mexico only grows worse by the day.
