After the smart cards it is the turn of the stamps to become intelligent or that is what the Royal Mail claims about its newest launch. The Royal Mail said intelligent stamps “mark the next step in the evolution of our stamps, bringing them firmly into the 21st Century.” You can view the new stamp through a smartphone and are led to a related webpage. These new stamps are part of Royal Mail’s Great British Railway edition. While viewing the first stamp the viewer will be directed to a short film showing Bernard Cribbins reading Auden’s famous poem The Night Mail. The poem was written in 1936 for the Post Offices own blockbuster film Night Mail. The application is another example of augmented reality in which real world scenes or situations are annotated and enhanced by pairing them with web-based data.

Philip Parker of the Royal Mail while talking on the occasion of the launch was excited about the new technology used in their stamps and was very excited about bringing intelligent stamps to the nation’s post.
