The UN General Assembly approved a resolution that calls for the ‘immediate and unconditional’ return of President Manuel Zelaya to Honduras as a ‘legitimate and constitutional’ move. The deposed President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, came to New York to address the UN General Assembly and ask for support from the international community regarding his return to power.
Zelaya presented to the UN General Assembly’s 192 member countries the situation in his country following the recent military coup that removed him from power.
The deposed head of state also met with the president of the UN General Assembly, Nicaraguan Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, who intends to join Zelaya on Thursday when he returns to Tegucigalpa. Zelaya subsequently accepted the offer by D’Escoto to take the return trip to his country to fulfill his presidential term which ends on January 27, 2010.
However, the new president of Honduras, Roberto Micheletti, has said that if the deposed president returns to the country, he will be met by orders to detain him. The political crisis worsened in Honduras on Sunday with the arrest and deportation of Zelaya to Costa Rica by the Armed Forces.
The UN General Assembly has declared that it will not recognize any government other than that of the ‘constitutional president’ of Honduras.
