The world has seen solar cars, solar powered parking lots, even miniaturized solar powered pieces of art. Now, the we will soon witness the maiden flight of the world’s first solar powered airplane, if all goes well for Bertrand Piccard, the Swiss psychiatrist and balloonist, who has been dedicated his time and efforts in the design and development of the solar powered airplane.
Mr. Piccard had joined hands with Solar Impulse Foundation in the year 2003 and had later announced that, the the collaboration will be working in a project, with which they hoped to bring out a working and practical solar powered airplane.
The all new revolutionary airplane had recently made its debut and test flight and is expected to make a trip across the globe soon, that would include 20-25 days of flight time. The Solar Impulse team taxied the their coolest invention to the tarmac and with a few hops, the solar powered airplane took to the skies, after reaching the optimum take off speed. However, the solar airplane from the Solar Impulse Foundation isn’t the only fixed aircraft that is being powered by solar energy.
The Odysseus, a company that has already perfected the solar energy technology, has designed and developed a surveillance drone, that has capability of being in flight for five straight years, taking its fuel from the sun.

I’m impressed. One can hope that this technology can eventually be used for commercial planes and hopefully reduce costs of traveling by plane.

No flights at night.
