These are truly bad times for South Asian people. Apart from recession, poverty, unemployment, lack of good governance these countries are grappling with growing internal strife, conflicts and terrorism. A huge untamed monster is waking up again and one wonders how much more will be devoured and destroyed.
In Sri Lanka military is flushing LTTE out but hundreds and thousands of civilians are dead or maimed for life in the operation which has lasted for couple of months. In Bangladesh the sudden mutiny by BDR and brutal killing of more than hundred officers by their own men is shocking beyond imagination. The true political story waits to be unveiled.
After Bombay’s daring terrorist attacks, terrorists groups carried out a more daring and violent attack by targeting bus full of Sri Lankan cricketers in Pakistan. The description and footage of young terrorists carrying best arms and ammunition complete with hand held rocket launchers seems to be straight from some violent Hollywood film. There is no further doubt about spread of terror networks.
And India is trapped between these neighbors dreading backlash from all sides. Borders are truly porous and it doesn’t take much for the trouble and turmoil to spill over. Also since its election time India is seeing birth of new problems; like the birth of new moral, religion and regional young brigades in Karnataka and elsewhere.
South Asian countries are slipping into an abyss and total chaos. Much of these troubles are of their own making. Unless they choose to handle these crises with firm hand and leadership, these resourceful countries will end up destroying themselves and each other while rest of the world will be mute spectator.
