Twitter the massive real-time social networking service has been the lifeline for millions of users worldwide and of late has become a new tool for marketing, for both big and small enterprises. However, as far as the non-profit organizations or NGO s are concerned, social networking hasn’t been all that great for their cause. In a recent report it was established that, the ‘Causes’ application on Facebook wasn’t able to gather much money for charities, despite having a massive user base of 26 million monthly users,
But now it seems that, Twitter has come to the rescue of the struggling charities. It is fast growing into a social network for charities enabling such organizations to spread awareness about various issues and raise funding as well. One of the most successful campaigns for charity via Twitter has been the global Twestival that was launched in February this year and has raised over $250,000 for charity:water. It is a NGO working hard to provide clean and safe drinking water to the developing nations of the world. Volunteers from this organization worked hard to rope in other Twitter communities across 200 cities. However, even with $250,00 raised in charity, still the Twestival could not achieve its goal of a $1 million.

In another instance, Twitter launched an all new charitable event by the name of Tweetsgiving in November 2008 and help raise $10,000 in just 2 days. The entire amount was used to construct a new class room for a school in Tanzania.
