One of the biggest social networking services, Twitter has now announced that, it could release a batch of deleted usernames for reuse within a few weeks. the statement was given by none other than the co-founder of Twitter, Ev Williams at the Twitter Chirp Conference who stated that, the ‘deleted names’ are hopefully going to be available to new users for reuse.
Since the launch of the micro blogging service, there has been an explosion of registrations on the Twitter website and in many cases, users have simply signed up for Twitter and never even bothered to use the service and that category includes the ‘inactive names’ where the users haven’t used Twitter for more than six months. Then, there is also the case of an individual who registered an astounding 10,000 Twitter usernames and have never even used even one of them.
A major concern while releasing the abandoned user names is the confusion that occurs when that particular user might wish to resume with the Twitter service and might find his username being taken by someone. Another big issue is what Twitter is actually supposed to do with a dormant user name that, has some tweets attached to them? Would it be ethical on part of the company to delete these tweets and make the username available for new users?
