twitter unveils Verification Service for Celebrities

While we have heard so much about celebrities like Britney Spears, Tom Cruise and others using Twitters to stay in touch with other fans and the rest of the world, there seem to be many fake accounts in the names of celebrities which not only jeopardize their safety but also reduces the credibility of Twitter itself.

Last week, Tony La Russa the manager of St Louis Cardinals Major League Baseball team sued Twitter for an unspecified amount for the company could not protect his name and a fake account literally spread malicious rumours about him and the club.

Twitter is taking serious measures in order to quell impersonation and other problems faced by celebrities. They have launched a “verification service” which would be available in beta only for public officials, celebrities, artists and others who are a risk of being impersonated.

The verified profiles will have a seal. This verification service would not be available to everyone and unverified twitter accounts do not necessarily indicate falsified information. One could c heck for their reliability by checking the official site and if there is a link back to Twitter.
