U.S Base Attacked in Afghanistan. 2 Dead

Even with the relentless offensive against the Taliban both in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and in Afghanistan by Pakistan and the United States respectively, still, there is no easing of suicide terror attacks on NATO and U.S. defense forces in Afghanistan.

In a latest development, one of the primary United States bases in Afghanistan was attacked by rockets launched by the militants. The attack led to the deaths of two U.S soldiers along with six others. Two civilians are also reportedly a part of the growing casualties of today’s attack.

However, according to many experts, this base that is located 40 miles (60 kms) north-east of Kabul has not seen many attacks and it is being considered quite unusual for such an attack to take place here.

In a statement, NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization stated that, the two soldiers who died in today’s attack were part of its International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Soldiers from over 40 countries are part of the ISAF, that includes troops from the United States army and from many other European countries. The two dead soldiers, bring the total casualties rate of the U.S army personnel to 80 this year.

However, such recent attacks has only strengthened the United States decision to send in an extra 21,000 troops to re-enforce its armed forces in the war torn region. This new influx of soldiers will bring the total number soldiers to some 68,000 Americans troops and about 33,000 NATO led forces.

One of the major attacks on the U.S Bagram base occurred in February 2007, when a suicide bombing was carried out by the militants, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 people. That attack took place during the visit of then Vice President, Dick Cheney to Afghanistan and the U.S bases there.
