UK nurses wary of untested swine flu vaccine

Only 30 percent of UK nurses asked in a poll said they are willing to have the H1N1 vaccine. Even if the country’s Department of Health says, “They have a duty to themselves, they are at risk. They have a duty to their patients not to infect their patients and they have a duty to their families. I think you solve those responsibilities by being vaccinated,” two thirds of British nurses are not willing to avail of the swine flu vaccine. Some are wary, while others plan to decline completely.

‘Some 60% of those who plan to decline say they are concerned about the safety of the untested treatment. Another 31% say there is no need for the vaccine.’ Some sentiments include apprehension to put oneself ‘at risk of, as yet, unknown long-term effects to facilitate a short-term solution,’ and being convinced first that there is, indeed, a genuine health risk and that the whole thing is not just government propaganda.

More than 2 million frontline health and social care personnel will have the opportunity to avail of the novel swine flu vaccine. These are the people deemed to be crucial in the time of a pandemic. Although vaccination is optional, the country actively campaigns to convince these health workers, assuring them that the vaccine will be licensed before its use.
