The United Nations has strongly criticized the a new law on laid down by the government of Switzerland under which the construction of additional minarets for the mosques in the country has now been banned. The UN has called this ban completely “discriminatory and deeply divisive”. The foreign minister of Switzerland has also expressed concern over the new law stating that, such moves could tarnish the image of the country.
After a huge wave of protests from the Islamic countries across the globe, the U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay, commented on this latest highly controversial decision and has called the Swiss government’s decision as “anti-foreigner scare-mongering“. The United Nations human rights organization has it headquarter in Geneva. Even though many elements within the Swiss government have regulatory opposed this initiative, still the referendum has had government support as it is being viewed as a preventive tool against radical and militant Islam.
As per the newly passed referendum, the existing minarets in the country will not be affected and neither does it prohibits the Muslims to follow their religion. However, it does call for a ban on the construction of additional minarets. Sweden is also very much against the new Swiss referendum and has went to the length of even suggesting that United Nations should now review its decisions to hold conferences in the neutral country of Switzerland and should also think about relocating its offices from the country.
