Iran is said to be coddling nuclear weapons. US B-1 bombers were stationed in Qatar. U.S. forces were deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, two countries on either side of Iran. The cruise-missile shooting US submarine USS Florida, a “global strike” and special operations submarine, was positioned in the Indian Ocean in 2008 just in case a sudden attack on Iran was immediately due upon discovery or confirmation of Iranian nukes. The submarine is back in the US, though. Is the paranoia over? It looks like Bush was just bequeathing his alarmist streak to his favored successor McCain who was more than willing to emulate his war freak benefactor’s penchant for military might.
Realistically, if the US were to go to war with Iran, it would be dealing with a country whose size is twice that of Iraq and population that is thrice as big. Iran also has unified military forces that are capable of defending the country. Besides, with the US experience in invading Iraq that used up billions of taxpayers’ money, the proposition of the US invading Iran, this time, over the suspicion that the country has nuclear weapons will no longer fly with the American people. A war that has been counting many years in Iraq has not really brought victory for the US. Also, there will no longer be a Chaney, whose thirst for war is directly proportional to his business interests, who will do a pro-war rah-rah campaign.
The concept of ‘change’ may just prove to be more than Obama’s election campaign promise. There just might be hope with the new president that US will indeed champion peace, more than war. A lot of challenges lie in Obama’s hands. So are there a lot of hope and promise, too. The US is tired of war. So is Obama. And since he is a true dyed-in-the-wool denizen of corporate America, his battles lie in the field of economics, more than the war battlefields. This is a most opportune time since the US is currently waging its biggest battle to date – a devastating economic meltdown that threatens to debilitate it sooner than later.
