US Senate investigation: did the Bush administration abuse its powers of war?

The public deficit is in the billions, the crisis is terrible, and unemployment is a clear and present danger. Amidst all these, Barack Obama is determined to lift the US up again. He promised the Congress that US will recover and emerge even stronger than before. Governmentally, though, he is facing dire straits as there is very little hope for bipartisan consensus.

In the meantime, an official investigation is about to open on the alleged and perceived abuses of the powers of war by the recently concluded Bush era. The Justice Committee of the Senate, starting on March 4, will open an inquiry to determine whether the government of George W. Bush covertly implemented torture, and if the invasion of Iraq was merely justified and not fully transparent.

The present White House, though, prefers to look forward, not backwards. However, it will not dissuade this inquiry initiative by the Senate where Democrats have a majority. Obama blamed Bush for the inherited situation and the inability of the national budget to address all problems.

Obama’s words did not exactly enthrall the Republican bloc. He was obviously playing out to the crowds, especially the media. The day after his speech, many media people claimed to have more faith in facing the crisis after hearing the president. His speech lasted 52 minutes and was interrupted by applause 60 times. Obama even called the crisis not as a limitation but as an opportunity to redistribute wealth.

After the Bush era, there is really no other way but up.
