Cuba

One of the worst commercial blockades throughout history would be coming to an end?

The UN General Assembly approved this Wednesday by a large majority a resolution that asks the end of the commercial and economic embargo declared for almost half a century the United States against Cuba.

The request was almost unanimous support of the 192 countries participating in the UN, as 185 countries voted in favor and only three against (United States, Israel and Palau). There were two abstentions (Marshall Islands and Micronesia) and two countries did not vote (El Salvador and Iraq).

This is the 17th consecutive time that Cuba presents to the Assembly a resolution that criticizes the negative effects of sanctions imposed by the United States and calls for its repeal. The resolution presented to the plenary by the Cuban foreign minister, Felipe Perez Roque, received on this occasion, a support higher than last year, when it was accompanied by 184 countries and rejected by four.

“You are alone, completely isolated,” he said shortly before the vote Perez Roque, leading to the U.S. delegation.

In his speech, the Cuban foreign minister also said that “seven out of ten Cubans spent their lives under this irrational and unhelpful policy.” “The blockade is older than Barack Obama (the Democratic challenger for the U.S. presidency) and that my whole generation,” said the chancellor.

Besides useless, is cruel because it is the Cuban people who suffer most with this embargo.
