wearable friend finder Wear a Gadget, Find a Friend

If you thought social networking worked the best online, think again. Now you could find your friends on the street too! Students at the department of new Media at the University of Maine have developed a Wearable Friend Finder. This is supposed to make a personal connection and break the ice between strangers.

The idea is to let the wearer know the personalities of other people who pass by, provided they are also wearing the same Wearable Friend Finder. The users will have to enter their personality traits and preferences and the computer program will make it possible to be read by the small portable device. This now has to be plugged into a shirt or your bag and LED lights would glow when similar people pass each other.

However, the result of this Friend Finder in a huge crowd could be catastrophic with all the LEDs beeping and you wouldn’t know which one is glowing for whom. It would be confusing as hell and funny as hell too. Let us just wait and see if this thing ever gets into the market.

I wonder how this will work in situations like (the other does not want to talk, is having a bad day/moment, whatever… can they turn off the clothing or will they feel obligated to talk to the lit up partner? I could see the “match” feeling jilted when the lost friend now found passes right by despite the glowing obviousness of your “personal ora” ;)
