China is ready to talk with the Dalai Lama if Tibet waives its call for independence. The Chinese premier assesses that “the situation in the region is peaceful and stable and China is ready to resume talks.”
During a press conference, the Chinese Premier attributes the ‘peaceful and stable’ situation to the correctness of China’s policy in the region. In recent weeks, Beijing has sent police and paramilitary groups in Tibet to stifle any sign of protest and, in particular, to avoid a repetition of the events that erupted last year.
Chinese officials and envoys of the Dalai Lama have already held a series of talks but failed to achieve big objectives. “This kind of talks can continue. The key is that the Dalai Lama must show his sincerity so that the dialogue can get to achieve substantial results,” said Wen Jiabao.
The 50th anniversary of Tibet’s failed revolt and the Dalai Lama’s exile was celebrated last March 10. In a speech in India, the Dalai Lama called for ‘meaningful autonomy’ for Tibet and accused Beijing of having caused ‘untold suffering and destruction’ to the Tibetans. The Buddhist monk denied accusations from China that Tibet is separatist. Wen has accused Western countries of exploiting the Dalai Lama, who is described as a political exile rather than a religious figure.
