“Wii are the champion”

Nintendo said it reached a record level of sales of its Wii console in the United States and Canada in December, defying market fears that the peak of the game, launched three years ago, has passed. The company also said sales of its DS portable video game probably reached unprecedented level in 2009, and that its total sales reached 40 million units in Europe, making it the device to best-selling games in the history of that continent.

With the huge demand for the Wii and DS games, Nintendo’s shares jumped more than five times in two years since October 2007. With this, the company achieved the rank of third company in Japan with the highest market value.

Since then, however, the roles of the company fell 68% with signs that sales of consoles and games decreased.

Nintendo has sold more than 3 million units of Wii in the U.S. in December 2009 from 2.14 million unit in the same period last year, thanks to a strong series of releases of new games like New Super Mario Bros. and a price cut on the console.

Nintendo cut by 20% the price of the Wii so the console could sell more than the PlayStation 3 from Sony and Xbox 360 from Microsoft, in the second half of last year to bring power back to its sales.
