Will Israel and Hamas Stop?

Israel has announced that a ground attack is still on the cards much to the dismay of many international observers. Ehu Barak now explicitly mentioned regime change as the objective of the present military operations. While hundreds are dead by now in the crowded city of Gaza, the government officials in Palestine haven’t been able to do much. Hamas is now nearly over.

The Egyptian Newspaper al-Ahram reflected the opinions of millions across the world with the ominous comment “If you can’t kill the wolf, don’t pull its tail,”. Hamas has been not only employing weak terrorist tactics but also being foolish in firing rockets at Israeli cities. If a ground attack should take place, the chaotic region could worsen and result in a downward spiral.

The implications could be disastrous with millions of refugees pouring into Egypt, and other neighbouring Arab nations. With peace not being the preferred option of either the Palestinians or the Israelis, it becomes the responsibility of International observers to interfere in the bloody conflict. A solution would be for the European Union to intervene, either politically, diplomatically or even militarily. Russia could do a lot to resolve the conflict too.

However, the fear of Britain, the U.S, and even of Arab nations has stopped France, Germany, Russia and other European countries from interfering and putting the bloody chaos to an end. Iranians have ominously started raising slogans against Israel and the U.S. while there is no let up in the violence encouraged by the Americans and the Israelis. The future looks bleak not only for the Middle East but also people all over the world. The ripple effect can be felt across the globe.

An immediate ceasefire enforced by the E.U and other international observers and sanctions against Israel could be the immediate option. An international governing body could engage the Palestinians sans Hamas and other terrorist organizations. The bottom line would be, the need for a pro-active and non aligned international presence, preferably that of France, Germany and Russia.
