Gamers have yet another reason to rejoice as Nintendo is planning to launch a TV channel that will be exclusively targeted at Wii users. The channel would be called Winoma and will be available at all households that have a Wii and an internet connection. The service is mainly intended to generate revenue for the company in the way of advertisements and thus the service would be free.
The programmes like cartoons, quizzes, shows would be handles by the Japanese ad agency Dentsu. Certain programmes may however be pay-per-view and TV analysts fear Wii would become the king of the living room and people wouldn’t be interested in watching anything else anymore. The Wii TV is just another of the company’s ‘channels’ being offered to eager Wii fanboys.
Now we would have to wait and watch if the Xbox 360 and PS3 guys would follow suit and launch their own TV channels. Like how the TV killed the Radio Star, Wii and gang might kill the TV star. TV may become another extension of the consoles without much demand for normal television programmes.
