The stock exchange of London, London Stock Exchange (LSE), announced that it intends to migrate their administration programs, of TradElect, based on language.NET and in the operating system Windows Server 2003, from Microsoft, for MilleniumIT, based on the Linux platform. The new software was already acquired and the transition should begin in October.
The change of systems was decided after a great flaw in the servers happened in September, 2008. That problem caused the suspension of the negotiations for about seven hours. The main executive of the company, Xavier Rolet decided to substitute the platform after the incident.
In the section of businesses, problems in the computers of operations are critical: a flaw of one hour can cause a damage of one billion of dollars. The servers cannot suffer any slowness and they should never crash or become offline.
The new platform is based basicaly on Linux, but it includes the operating system Solaris – from Oracle / Sun Microsystems -, database Oracle and equipments of net of the Cisco.
Besides the improvement in the speed, other factor that influenced the choice was the price of the new software. For the director of information and technology of LSE, David Lester, when comparing the annual value of 65 million dollars of TradElect, MilleniumIT was a great business because will cost 30 million dollars per year.
