The phenomenal success of Apple iPhone coupled with the growing enthusiasm and demand for Google Android 2.0 mobile operating system, the Windows Mobiles platform might be well on its way to obscurity. The launch of the Apple iPhone 3GS and Motorola Droid has captivated the imagination and attention of mobile phone enthusiasts all over the world, leading to a situation where most of the users and potential consumers aren’t even thinking about Windows Mobile.

The recent release of Windows Mobile version 6.5 hasn’t been able to do much to help the platform plant a firm feet in the mobile device arena. One of the primary reasons for the shunting of Windows Mobile is the fact that, even though, it does offer a host of services, yet it doesn’t appeal to the users visually. On the other hand, iPhone and Android provide numerous services, applications and a pleasant and exciting display, that makes them stand out.

According to Azita Arvani (Founder, Arvani Group),

“Windows Mobile was gaining fractions of market share. Then it just seemed like Microsoft dropped the ball a couple years ago. They need to have a different mindset and change their thinking completely. The world has changed. It’s no longer about downloading operating systems and downloading applications, and sitting and going on the Internet occasionally.”

There is still sliver of hope for Microsoft, it it seriously wishes to tap into the vast opportunities in the mobile phones arena. Microsoft needs to re-evaluate it strategies, give complete makeover to Windows Mobile and provide better venues for the application developers to work on Windows Mobile. Due to the fact that, Microsoft Windows still retains a majority of the market, can make it feasible for the company to reenter the mobile device domain with all guns blazing.
