Thousands of people are staging protests all over the world against Israel’s offensive attack in Gaza. The UNSC’s initiatives have failed to stop the continued military attack by Israel. As Israel remains adamant to stamp out Hamas even at the cost of lives of hundreds of innocent civilians of Palestine, such worldwide protest and show of solidarity to the victims of violence seem more than just symbolic gestures. They represent saner voice of people all around the globe wanting to live in a peaceful world.
Israel had a strong reason to act against intermittent rocket attacks of Hamas. But such large scale offensive action to take control of Palestine and destroy Hamas could have been avoided. Many innocent lives which perished in these attacks could have been saved. Hundreds of children have been killed, injured, maimed and scarred for life. This war has changed lives and destiny of them all. With Arabs rallying behind Hamas, it’ll polarize the world again and connect Palestine issue to the greater Islamic cause of militant groups like Al-Qaeda.
Maybe war will be over one day and Hamas will be thrown out of power. But ethnic, religious, regional, political rifts in that region are too deep rooted to be uprooted totally. This war will create excuses for many more offensives and wars. Maybe UN will move in with medical and food aid but some lives and dreams will remain forever scarred and destroyed.
