26 million of the 35 million online Indians use Yahoo as a primary or secondary web platform for many of their online activities.
Though Google is quite ubiquitous even in India, yahoo does not seem to be losing its stronghold in this economically backward country. Hence, it was quite a surprise that Yahoo had to buy a full front page ad space in India’s largest newspaper, The Times of India.
It was quite surprising to wake up and see the glaring yellow Yahoo ad and if one were to think further, it only suggested that Yahoo wanted to reinforce Indians and their thinking by asserting that Yahoo was more important and visible than ever. It could also be a way of communicating with the readers that Yahoo is still around, though Google has permeated the online Indian’s life in quite a significant manner.
Times of India is also one of the most expensive newspapers in India to advertise and Yahoo certainly knows where to get its target audience right! Perhaps Google will begin a rival campaign too, and it needs to be seen which of these two giants will succeed in this country of a billion people.
